This document specifies requirements, test methods, performance criteria, and manufacturer'sinstructions for smoke alarms that operate using scattered light, transmitted light or ionization, intended for household or similar residential application. This document includes additional requirements for smoke alarms, which are also suitable for use inleisure accommodation vehicles. For the testing of other types of smoke alarms, or smoke alarms working on different principles, thisdocument should only be used for guidance. Smoke alarms with special features, such as radiointerlinking or special characteristics and developed for specific risks, are not covered by thisdocument. This document allows, although it does not require, the inclusion within the smoke alarm of facilitiesfor interconnection with other similar smoke alarms and/or accessories, and for alarm silencing.Where such facilities are included, this document specifies applicable requirements. This document does not cover devices intended for incorporation in systems using separate controland indicating equipment.NOTE Certain types of smoke alarms contain radioactive materials. The national requirements for radiationprotection differ from country to country and they are not specified in this document. Such smoke alarms should, however, comply with the applicable national requirements.
This International Standard describes the objectives and functional requirements for the control and mitigation of fires and explosions on offshore installations used for the development of hydrocarbon resources. This International Standard is applicable to: - fixed offshore structures; - floating systems for production, storage and offloading; - petroleum and natural gas industries. Mobile offshore units as defined in this International Standard and subsea installations are excluded, although many of the principles contained in this International Standard can be used as guidance. This International Standard is based on an approach where the selection of control and mitigation measures for fires and explosions is determined by an evaluation of hazards on the offshore installation. The methodologies employed in this assessment and the resultant recommendations will differ depending on the complexity of the production process and facilities, type of facility (i.e. open or enclosed), manning levels, and the environmental conditions associated with the area of operation. NOTE Statutory requirements, rules and regulations can in addition be applicable for the individual offshore installation concerned.
This standard defines terms specific to, and in general use by, fire protection agencies.Fire safety engineering and fire testing terms are covered in BS EN ISO 13943.This standard does not include terms where the standard dictionary definition is applicable. Neither does it include terms and definitions which are unique to any small specialized discipline within fire safety.
This part of BS 5871 specifies installation and maintenancerequirements for independent gas-fired flueless fires, convector heatersand heating stoves of nominal heat input not exceeding 6 kW burning2nd and 3rd family gases for the purpose of heating rooms or internalspaces in domestic (see note 3) or commercial premises. Specifically, itcovers:a) fixed appliances that satisfy all the requirements of BS EN 14829;b) fixed appliances that satisfy the combustion requirements ofBS EN 14829;c) convector heaters of nominal heat input not exceeding 4.2 kW inthe form of greenhouse heaters in respect of single applianceinstallations.NOTE 1 Appliances a) and b) are only intended as a secondary heatsource (see Commentary and Recommendations on 4.2).The heat input and ventilation, fixing and gas supply for convectorheaters in the form of greenhouse heaters are specified in 8.4, 9.4 andClause 11, respectively. This part of BS 5871 covers the selection of a suitable appliance, roomsizing and ventilation requirements and other measures necessary toensure a safe installation.NOTE 2 Heat inputs in this document are based on net calorific value.[See also Commentary and Recommendations on Clause 5, item b).]NOTE 3 As well as normally constructed dwellings, domestic premisesinclude any permanently sited caravans, holiday homes and residentialpark homes. (See IGE/UP/8 [9].)NOTE 4 Convector heaters in the form of greenhouse heaters areavailable in two forms, those which are freestanding and those which areintended to be fixed to a wall or floor. This standard is not applicable to:a) mobile and portable appliances conforming to BS EN 449;b) appliances in motor caravans and touring caravans;c) appliances in boats;d) installations in agricultural premises; ore) installations in transportable accommodation units.NOTE 5 For the maintenance of existing installations of 3rd familyflueless appliances in boats, see PD 5482-3.
This code of practice covers the design, installation and operation of solidfuel heating and cooking appliances (hereafter referred to as appliances)which are suitable for fitting into small craft from 2.5 m to 24 m inlength. These appliances can burn either natural or manufactured solidmineral fuels, or natural or manufactured wood logs. This code of practice gives guidance on appliance selection, designconsiderations, installation requirements, inspection and testing, andpreparing instructions for the end user of the appliance. Guidance isalso provided on the necessary safety information to be provided to theend user concerning the maintenance and safe use of these appliances. This code of practice only applies to freestanding appliances withclosable doors, with and without legs. This code of practice does not apply to the installation of applianceswith a firebox volume of less than 0.01 m3 and a grate size smallerthan 0.05 m2, and where the dimensional recommendations of theinstallation cannot be met (e.g. in traditional narrowboat boatman’sback cabins).
The IEC 62310 series of three standards applies to stand-alone operating a.c. static transfersystems (STS) intended to ensure the continuity of load supply through controlled transfer, with or without interruption of power, from two or more independent a.c. sources. This series of standards includes information for the overall integration of the STS and itsaccessories into the a.c. power network and includes requirements for the switchingelements, their control and protective elements, where applicable.Part 1 of the series concerns general and safety requirements.Part 2 of the series concerns electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. This Part 3 of the series concerns methods for specifying performance and test requirementsincluding applicable safety tests referenced in standard IEC 62310-1 for general and safetyrequirements. This standard applies for single-phase, phase-phase and three-phase static transfers in a. c.systems up to 1 000 V. It takes precedence over all aspects of generic performancestandards, and no additional performance testing is necessary. The requirements have been selected so as to be consistent with compatibility levels for lowfrequencyconducted disturbances and signalling in public low-voltage power supply systems(see IEC 61000-2-2) as well as to ensure an adequate level of performance when the STS isapplied in diverse critical load situations. The requirements take into account the differing testconditions necessary to encompass the range of physical sizes and power ratings of STS.This standard applies to STS as a stand-alone product, whether presented as a unit or anassembly of units. This standard does not apply to:– devices for d.c. source switching;– single source systems;– transfer systems using only electromechanical switching devices with interruption of thesupply to the load during transfer and intended to be used in emergency power systems orcovered by IEC 60947-6-1;– automatic switching devices integrated into UPS covered by the IEC 62040 series of UPSproduct standards.NOTE Additional or different requirements may apply to STS intended for use on board of vehicles including shipsand aircrafts, in emergency power systems subject to a particular regulation e.g. health care facilities, fire fightingor emergency rescue, in tropical countries or where elevations are greater than 1 000 m.
This American National Standard is applicable to all persons who design, manufacture, assemble, modify, operate, clean, maintain, service, or repair material recovery facilities (MRFs) which engage in receiving, storing, and processing commingled recyclable materials which have been previously collected orotherwise diverted from the solid waste stream. This standard does not apply to scrap processingfacilities (North American Industry Classification system code number 42193, formerly Standard IndustrialClassification number 5093), unless the scrap processing facility operates a MRF, which MRF would thenbe subject to this standard. The safety requirements are divided into 7 sections and are applicable as described in 1.1.1 through1.1.3.1.1.1 Sections 1 through 3 provide general information and definitions and shall apply to all materialrecovery facilities (MRFs) covered by this standard.1.1.2 Sections 4 through 6 provide for physical plant, processing machinery and mobile equipmentrequirements that shall apply to both new and existing MRFs.1.1.3 Section 7 provides for safety programs and safety requirements that shall apply to both new andexisting MRFs.
