Appliances not intended for normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.Examples of such appliances are animal clippers, animal shearers and appliances for hairdressers.As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account: the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision; playing with the appliance by young children. Attention is drawn to the fact that: for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary; in many countries additional requirements are specified by national health authorities, national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities. However, hair clipping and shaving appliances supplied with manicure, pedicure, or other similar attachments or accessories are investigated under these requirements and such additional requirements as are applicable to the appliance under consideration. 1DV.2.2 Modification of the third paragraph of the part 2 by replacement with the following: Motor-operated lather makers, lather makers incorporating heaters, barber shop vacuum cleaners for use on persons, and other types of hair clipping and shaving appliances not specifically named here are investigated under these requirements and under such additional requirements as are applicable to the appliance under consideration. 1DV.2.2 Modification of Note 103 of the part 2 to add the following items: for an appliance that utilizes some other source of energy - such as gas or steam - in addition to electric energy, additional requirements may be necessary. It does not apply to the safety of electrically driven seating which is covered by the machinery, low voltage andEMC directives.It does not apply to tilting and reclining mechanisms fitted to work chairs.

This GSO standard specifies requirements for the resistance to ignition of mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bed bases when tested in accordance with BS EN 597-1, BS EN 597-2 and BS 6807 including those used in areas vulnerable to arson. It does not apply to mattress protectors. The levels of ignition resistance have been set after careful consideration of the fire risk of the particular end-use environment involved. These levels do not necessarily reflect the behavior of the mattress, mattress pad, divan or bed base in a fully developed fire.
