The objective of this European Standard is to achieve the safe operation of gas connection valves for use with metal hose assemblies by specifying the requirements of performance, materials and test methods. Metal hose assemblies are referred to in prEN 14800 and prEN 15070. These valves are suitable for connection to domestic appliances inside or outside a dwelling using gas at a pressure of up to and including 0,5 bar. These valves are designed for the use with movable appliances; they may also be used for the connection of fixed appliances. The term gas relates to the first, second and third families as referred to in EN 437,Table 1.

This part of BS 5440 specifies requirements for the installation of gasappliances to chimneys, chimney installation work likely to beundertaken by gas engineers and operatives working under UK gasindustry conditions and requirements for the maintenance of chimneys.It is applicable to open flue chimneys for Type B gas appliances androom-sealed chimney configurations for Type C gas appliances, each ofrated input not exceeding 70 kW net (see Note 2 and Note 3), burning1st, 2nd or 3rd family gases. It applies to chimneys of the naturaldraught or fanned draught type and is applicable to open flue chimneysand room-sealed chimneys supplied with the appliance as well as tothose supplied separately.It complements the requirements for the design, installation andcommissioning of chimneys as required in BS EN 15287-1 andBS EN 15287-2 and requires extra details that are specific to the UK gasindustry. This is kept in perspective by quoting some details ofBS EN 15287-1 and BS EN 15287-2.It specifies the following:• requirements for the selection of the appropriate flueing option forgas appliances in the UK;• requirements for the installation of gas appliances to newchimneys, or chimney configurations;• requirements for the installation of gas appliances to existingchimneys or chimney configurations;• requirements for the installation of appliances which carry a CEmark and for which the manufacturer’s instructions are availableto the installer;• requirements installation of appliances which do not carry a CEmark and used/second-hand appliances for which themanufacturer’s instructions are available to the installer.This part of BS 5440 is applicable to:• complete chimney and all chimney components from the applianceconnection to the discharge point into outside air;• the installation of gas appliances to existing chimneys that wereintended originally for appliances burning other fuels;• chimneys for residential park homes but not to chimneys forleisure accommodation vehicles.This part of BS 5440 is not applicable to gas-fired incinerators. Refer toBS 5871-3 for the installation of decorative fuel effect appliances.This part of BS 5440 includes compatibility of appliances installed inthe UK with new chimneys designated under BS EN 1443 and withexisting chimneys, including non-designated chimneys.

This British Standard specifies requirements for the selection,installation, inspection, commissioning and maintenance of gas‑firedwater-heating appliances, which have a rated heat input notexceeding 70 kW, based on net calorific value.It applies to water-heating appliances utilizing 1st, 2nd or 3rd familygases designed to operate in the condensing or non‑condensingmode for the supply of hot water for domestic purposes in domesticdwellings or domestic dwellings in commercial premises.This standard does not apply to:a) water-heating appliances with a rated input of over 70 kW;b) hot water supply systems in multiple dwellings supplied from acentral source.It does not cover the detailed design and installation of the whole hotwater distribution system, which was specified in BS 5449.This standard applies to water-heating appliances which carry aCE mark and also to previously used water-heating appliances whichdo not carry the CE mark (see 5.3.1).

This part of BS 5871 specifies installation and maintenance requirements for inset live fuel effect gas fires of heat input not exceeding 15 kW (16.6 kW based on gross calorific value) burning 2nd and 3rd family gases for the purpose of heating rooms or spaces in domestic (see Note 5) or commercial premises. Combined appliances of the type where a fire is used in conjunction with a boiler or circulator are also covered in so far as the installation of the combined appliance is concerned.\nThe standard is applicable to appliances intended for installation either:\na) within a builder's opening and/or fireplace recess and which may, additionally, be suitable for installation in a purpose designed metal flue box conforming to BS 715 and flue conforming to the constructional and temperature requirements of BS EN 1856-1 and BS EN 1856-2; or\nb) using a direct flue connection, if specified in the manufacturer's instructions; or\nc) in the case of a room sealed appliance, using a flue terminal/air duct assembly supplied by the appliance manufacturer.\nThis standard covers the selection of a suitable appliance, the ventilation and flueing requirements, and other measures necessary to ensure a safe installation.\nThe central heating and/or hot water system connected to a combined appliance is not within the scope of this standard and reference should be made to BS 5449 (see Note 6) and BS 5546 for this part of such an installation.\nThis standard is not applicable to mobile and portable appliances conforming to BS EN 449 or to appliances in touring caravans.\nAdditional requirements for the installation of fire/back boilers and fire/back circulators are specified in Clauses 15, 16, 17 and 18.\nNOTE 1 Inset live fuel effect gas fires differ from decorative fuel effect gas appliances, which burn gas so as to simulate a solid fuel fire or produce other decorative effects, in that they incorporate a heat exchanger and restrict the passage of the products of combustion between the appliance firebed and the chimney or flue. The only decorative fuel effect gas appliances covered by this part of BS 5871 are those shown in Figure lb) and detailed in 1d) of the commentary and recommendations on Clause 5 of this standard.\nNOTE 2 Unless the context requires otherwise, inset live fuel effect gas fires are hereinafter referred to as fires.\nNOTE 3 Heat inputs in this document are based on net calorific value. Figures based on gross calorific value are given in parenthesis where deemed necessary. Specifically, itcovers:a) fixed appliances that satisfy all the requirements of BS EN 14829;b) fixed appliances that satisfy the combustion requirements ofBS EN 14829;c) convector heaters of nominal heat input not exceeding 4.2 kW inthe form of greenhouse heaters in respect of single applianceinstallations.NOTE 1 Appliances a) and b) are only intended as a secondary heatsource (see Commentary and Recommendations on 4.2).The heat input and ventilation, fixing and gas supply for convectorheaters in the form of greenhouse heaters are specified in 8.4, 9.4 andClause 11, respectively.This part of BS 5871 covers the selection of a suitable appliance, roomsizing and ventilation requirements and other measures necessary toensure a safe installation.NOTE 2 Heat inputs in this document are based on net calorific value.[See also Commentary and Recommendations on Clause 5, item b).]NOTE 3 As well as normally constructed dwellings, domestic premisesinclude any permanently sited caravans, holiday homes and residentialpark homes. This standard gives guidance for identifying and investigating spillage,leakage or build‑up of combustion products from gas-fired appliances innon-domestic premises. It gives recommendations for determining thecombustion performance of such equipment, using electronic portablecombustion gas analysers. This involves sampling and measuring thecarbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO) in the ambient air andin gas-fired appliance chimneys.This standard is for use with equipment using 1st, 2nd or 3rd familygases.NOTE 1 An operative attending non-domestic premises might berequired to examine standard gas-fired appliances which are domestic orcommercial as well as customized process plant/equipment.NOTE 2 This standard does not cover the response of an emergency serviceprovider (ESP) to a gas emergency. It also does not cover procedures forinvestigating incidents that are reportable under the Reporting of Injuries,Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR) andthe Gas Safety (Management) Regulations 1996 (GSMR).NOTE 3 Combustion products from gas-fired appliances containaldehydes and oxides of nitrogen (NOx), predominantly nitrogenmonoxide (nitric oxide, NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO). Although thisstandard does not cover the measurement of these substances, quantitiesof such products could be present in the air and could cause harm andirritation to humans.
